If you are tired of the endless social media scrolls on Twitter or Facebook, and want something to read, but you’re not in the mood for a book that is at least 200 pages, then may I introduce you to Wattpad; a media platform not many people know about.

This platform is a place where (professional) users can publish stories for others to read. Here, users have the freedom to publish any sort of written content that they like, from fanfic to historical to non-fiction. Readers can leave a comment or a like, and subscribe to a book that they like, giving the writer the possibility to improve their books and writing skills.

Wattpad’s mission is to entertain and connect people through stories. There are more than 90 million people who are a member of the app, yet not many people seem to know this platform. The users their content can vary from simple short stories, to fully written out e-books. The offers on Wattpad are mostly in English, but the users are posting in 30 different languages.

Most stories that are published on Wattpad, won’t be noticed by the public eye, but there are some gems hidden on this platform. Take the well-known into Netflix produced film ‘The Kissing Booth’ and the books and films of the ‘After’ series written by Anna Todd. Besides giving users the possibility to write and publish their content, there are also traditional book publishers, film and TV producers active on Wattpad, looking for original content. Famous writers such as Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries), Scott Westerfield (Uglies) and Paulo Coehlo (The Alchemist) don’t shy away from the website, nor from her audience! Books such as The Vision, The Subway, or the book Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld are some of the pearls that can be found on this platform.

PS. My advice: don’t check the fandom genre, as it is full of 14-year-olds writing steamy stories about their teen idols that are very, and may I repeat, very unrealistic and badly written (unless you’re into that 🙂 ). Try the mystery/horror genre or non-fiction for better quality stories.
