Coming from HUB Radio to you, we’re firing the first shot of a series of live streams with a band from Dutch soil. With Queen’s Pleasure visiting BUas’ HUB, we get an hour filled with music that might remind you of Blur and the Who. With the power of the Ramones and the melancholy of The Smiths, they rocked the HUB down.

Queen’s Pleasure is the first band to join the live stream. In the upcoming two weeks, there will be three more live streams with various artists. In a collaboration with HUB radio, Publishing will provide you with all the details about the artists, so you don’t have to google search it yourself!

Driven by a brutal and poetic desire for love, the boys from this semi-psychedelic garage rock band perform with much energy. It might remind you of those like teenage boys. Guitarist Teun once said in an interview: “Within the members of the band, we are experiencing a lack of sex. If we played the field a bit more often, we might be less hyped on stage.” They wrote their song ‘Big Boys Loan’ about this issue. Whoever said ‘sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll’ clearly hasn’t met these boys.

But whether they have sex or not; it doesn’t really matter. What they’re missing in one field, is what they are over-compensating in the other: making music. Queen’s Pleasure is rapidly making their name. In January, they performed at Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS), a festival for European acts, and in that same month, the Dutch radio station 3FM named the band ‘3FM talent’. They even were planned to be the supporting act for the rock band Amber Run. But given the current circumstances, the shows got postponed. When we’ll be able to see them live, isn’t known yet.

However, we’re not missing out on some good music. In the live stream hosted by Vera Veltman, members Jurre and Teun played some acoustic versions of their songs. They even took a request and covered a song from Arctic Monkeys, a band which they all like. During the live stream, Vera had the opportunity to ask the over-energetic members some questions.

Starting with their name, Queen’s Pleasure. Which is an interesting name, that was proposed by the drummer’s dad. The duo explained that the meaning derives from English law; when criminals were sent to work in the Queen’s garden, they called it ‘at Queen’s pleasure.’ The band thought it to be a sick name and started performing under it.

At first, they were a blues-rock band, but they organically shifted into garage. It was never set in stone what kind of music they wanted to make, but they grew up with each other and started making the music they make today. Though, they jokingly claim they still don’t like each other, even though they have known each other for a long time now.

When asking for advice for starting bands, guitarist Teun says: “Don’t think too much. We just do whatever we feel like and what we want to do. We really stay true to ourselves, and that is what you really should do.” Jurre, the lead singer, adds that rushing isn’t helping. “The band itself started slowly. From performing for five people, to thirty and slowing growing to bigger numbers.” And that’s how they got where they are now. “Go up to people, don’t be afraid, ask pubs and venues if you can play there, talk to other musicians, play shitty gigs and live in a shitty apartment in Amsterdam, and let it happen.”

One of their biggest fans seems to be Jurre’s mom. “Our families have always been very supportive. We never really had anyone telling us not to do what we are doing.” Their hopes and dreams for the future? “Finishing our album. And maybe play on Pinkpop. That would be really cool.” If they’re dreaming to be a support act of their mutual favorite band Arctic Monkeys? “Hell no. I would rather sell out Paradiso than be the supporting act for a big band playing in a big stadium. Then we did it on our own. We want people to come for us.”

Coming back to the song Big Boys Loan, otherwise known as ‘the lack of sex song’, the boys enlighten us that it is still very accurate. But what do we expect during these times of corona? Maybe in the future that will change, especially with Jurre’s hair looking so damn fly. His secret? “Waking up, having a shower, and do nothing about it. I’m washing it once a week, I guess. It’s perfect.”
