I asked a fashion designer.
We all know the fashion trends and what you should wear to be up to date and seen as cool in society, right? But fashion is more than ion can express your personality and change your appearance, behaviour and standing. As we all live within a culture with such different personalities, bodies and appearances, I personally think we shouldn’t just all follow the fashion trends and standards. Fashion can be so much more exciting and fascinating than the mainstream. As my sister studied fashion design and is working for a German fashion brand called “Snocks”, design was always a huge topic in our family. Thus, I decided to interview my sister about your own style. Let’s have a look at what she got for us:
Find your style icons in persons and brands
“Step one is probably the simplest step and that is finding out your style icons. To give you an example, for me I at brands. So, when I think about my personal style I think about Isabel Marant, Chloe and Chanel. I want to feel, when I get dressed. It doesn't only have to igh-end brands or low-end brands, it's whatever feels like you and what your vibe is about. Then I have three people, that I look at when I think about my style. T would be Audrey Hepburn, Jane Birkin and Jenna Lyons. So, these are three women that combine all the styles that I love to mix and those are kind of the ones that influence the way I dress. So, now it is your turn. Think of persons and brands that stand for styles t and be seen in.”
Umbrella your style
“Step two is to put a label on it. Now that you found the companies that make you feel a certain way and the people that inspire you , it is time to figure out what the is. The umbrella is a term for how the style you like is actually named. So, looking at the people that you chose, is it bohemian, is it preppy, is it elegant, is it masculine, or maybe princessy? There are so many different areas that you can choose from and the great thing about it is, that you can also mix and match. For example, for me it is a mix of bohemian chic, effortless, masculine, princess and warrior. That is what I go for and when I get dressed, it is what I want to feel. Find these categories that make sense for you, start putting on a board and you will be surprised how easy it is to all of a sudden start defining your style once you look at the keywords. It will be so much easier for you to start getting more inspiration and to understand what it is that you are looking for, even when you go on any shopping website online. Just type in those keywords or styles and you will get much more relevant information and clothing that will fit you. Pinterest is a good platform to get some inspiration with the keywords you have chosen for yourself.”
Take action in your closet
“The next step is that you start taking action. So, what you need to do is go into your closet. But I don’t want to influence you to go and start buying a lot of new things because your style will change. Take a look at your closet, you will be surprised how many things you have in your closet, e already giving you an understanding of what your style is. I think that editing your closet is a great first step to start defining your style. Narrow down your closet and make sure that you have a wardrobe that is functional and works for you and your lifestyle. Once you go and dive into your wardrobe that you have right now, start being cutthroat with the clothing that you have. Things that will not serve you and not align with who you are and who you want to become, don't keep them! We all know how it affects us when we have a bunch of junk that we don't use, and it just lies there, and you keep staring at it. T . See if it fits you, because fit is everything. Once you then you will be able to see what new pieces you could add it. Also think about buying second hand, as we are facing the problem of global warming. A lot of cool things exist already!"
Start wearing it with confidence
“To make it complete, now it's time to start wearing it! Something that I used to do when I was younger I decided on what my style is, purchased all these items and then I was too scared of actually wearing them and to put myself out there with this style that I decided is mine. I think that you never should rush into it. Take it step by step. First, find the outfits that you constantly go back to and then you can start building on them. So, even if you decided that all of a sudden you love bringing some masculine vibes into your outfits, bring one item at a time. It doesn't have to be all of a sudden, because sometimes when you do that, and you step out of your house you feel uncomfortable. I feel like you really need to build your confidence, rather than just changing your whole style. Move into it slowly, as you keep going, you are going to start building your confidence. Start adding more items or play around with accessories and colours. This is where it all starts, and this is where the journey of finding your personal style really begins. Don't be scared to experiment. I think it is unnatural to think, this is my style for the rest of my life. I think that you will understand slowly what your aesthetic is and what is even more important: Comfort always comes first. I can swing between but I need to be comfortable and still feel like I am true to myself. Play around with styles, especially within the range that you chose for yourself. You can try different things. Don't be too attached to a specific aesthetic because like with anything in life we change, we evolve. Go with the flow, with the years you and your style and what you would like to express will most likely change.”
To sum it up, getting to know your personal style is all about and new things out step by step. I hope you got inspired the article and that you will try out some new styles that will underline your unique character and values. Because uniqueness and difference are what the world needs!
