From Australia to Bolivia: Mik's Journey to Build a Safe Haven for Children

About this post

Booking a one-way ticket to Bolivia. A life-changing decision made by the Australian Mik back in 2002. Why? To build a safe home for children. “My dream was to open up this place for unfortunate kids who don’t have the opportunity to follow their dreams.”

After building his foundation, called Casa Segura, literally from the ground up, it’s safe to say that Mik accomplished his dream. Over the last 23 years, more than fifty children have found shelter at Casa Segura, and 22 children—some of them now grown-ups—still live there. Giving children access to education and seeing them eventually graduate are some of Mik’s highlights. At the same time, Mik encountered numerous obstacles, from not being able to help children to cutting fifteen hectares of jungle with a machete.
