I bet you have been to the beautiful capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, right? Well, Haarlem, a charming and historically rich city, is located just outside of Amsterdam! Often overshadowed by its bustling neighbor, this picturesque city offers culture and a slower pace of life, making it an ideal destination for a day trip. Whether you're a history lover, art enthusiast, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, with its historical streets, old windmills and cozy cafés, Haarlem has something for everyone. This destination promises a day filled with delightful discoveries. For this article I traveled all the way to Haarlem, so let me be your guide today! Let’s explore all the fun things you can do in this city!
I'll cover:
- the 'Grote Markt'
- Frans Hals Museum
- Shopping
- Eating
- Peaceful escape
- Bonus
1. Start at the 'Grote Markt'
The Grote Markt is the heart of Haarlem and a great place to begin your day. This lively square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, including the famous Grote of Sint-Bavokerk. A perfect day to visit Haarlem is on the Saturdays because this is when the market comes alive with fresh produce, flowers, and local treats. Since you're at the ‘Grote Markt’ now don’t forget to snap some photos of the historic architecture! After visiting the Grote Markt your camera roll will be full, because the buildings are absolutely stunning! The big church also really elevates the historical atmosphere of the ‘Grote Markt’. Unfortunately, it was raining when I visited so there's no blue sky in the photos.

2. Visit the Frans Hals Museum
Frans Hals was a famous Dutch painter in the Golden Age, his paintings are now stored in the museum, but the museum also has paintings from other painters from the same period. Frans Hals studied painting in Haarlem, so this city was very important in his life, which is also the reason why the museum is located in Haarlem. This museum is a must-see if you like art! Yet also, if you like history, the museum is located in a stunning old building.
3. Shopping

The "Gouden Straatjes," Haarlem's shopping avenues, are filled with specialty shops, vintage shops, and unique boutiques. It's enjoyable to window shop and take in the ambiance, even if you have no plans to purchase anything. the well-known retail chains, such as H&M, Mango, Zara, can also be found in Haarlem, although it is a great shopping city I would not go to Haarlem just for this, because in terms of shops, it offers the same as Breda.
4. Eating

When visiting Haarlem I did not stay for dinner, which I think is sad, because all the restaurants seemed really nice. I can only imagine how stunning it must look in the summer, lovely terraces filled with life and people enjoying their food and drinks under the warm sun. However, I did find one of the best lunch spots I've ever been to in my life. It's named Brussels bun, this lunch spot has delicious sandwiches, paninis, smoothies and so on.
I’m usually decisive, but stepping inside made me want to try the whole menu. The cost of these sandwiches ranges from €4.50 to €7.50, depending on their size. In the end, I chose a delicious chicken sandwich that did not disappoint! It's an absolute must-visit!
5. Escape the city
Haarlem also has a lot of peaceful quiet places that are nice to visit! Firstly, Haarlem is known for its hofjes, or secret courtyards. These serene tiny gardens are free to enter during the day and are hidden behind old homes. They're ideal for a peaceful walk and a respite from the bustling town. Or, to appreciate Haarlem's nature beauty, take a stroll beside the Spaarne River. You'll see antique windmills like Molen De Adriaan, as well as picturesque bridges and houseboats. You can rent a boat or paddleboard to explore the river if you're feeling adventurous.
6. Bonus: trip to the beach
To my surprise, Haarlem is near the beach. If you have extra time, Haarlem is just a quick train ride away from the beaches of Zandvoort or Bloemendaal. It’s the perfect way to end your day with a seaside sunset. Or to enjoy a breath of fresh air and unwind at the end of your day in winter.

With its rich history, artistic prosperity, and serene retreats, Haarlem is a city that has it all. Every area of this city has something unique to offer, whether you're wandering along the peaceful Spaarne River, discovering the lively Grote Markt, or immersing yourself in art at the Frans Hals Museum. The ideal escape from the bustle of everyday life is provided by Haarlem's unusual blend of culture and peacefulness. Thus, Haarlem is certain to leave you with priceless memories, regardless of how long you intend to stay or how short your trip is. Prepare to fall in love with this enchanting Dutch treasure, so pack your bags!
Is Haarlem too far away for you or doesn't it sound appealing? In an earlier edition I visited and wrote about a day trip to Nijmegen, you can read it here.
