Tattoos are cool. They are a form of art, gaining popularity every year with the bad stigma around them vanishing at a steady pace. Lots of students have them, and plenty of people want them. Is there a possibility they might still influence your career in a negative way?

Everybody at BUas is studying so they can have the career they desire after they graduate. How much would it suck if you run into problems getting your dream job just because you have some ink on your body?

Legally, companies aren’t allowed to discriminate against people with tattoos. That means that they shouldn’t not hire you because you have a couple of tatt’s. However, we all know that putting something into practice is very different in realty, such as not being discriminatory when hiring.   In this article, I will talk about types of tattoo's that are most accepted, and the careers where they are the most and least appreciated in.

Let’s start with the positives. Tattoos aren’t going to decrease your job prospects most of the time.

It also depends on what kind of tattoo you have, where you have it, and your profession. For people in the military, health care professionals, and bankers, tattoos aren’t as suitable, and it might be harder to get a job if you have visible tattoos. For people in the creative sector, tattoos are more accepted in the Netherlands.

In the hospitality sector, it can depend on the situation whether tattoos are accepted or not. Some companies have traditional dress codes that include tattoos where the employees can't have visible ones.

Hey! That leaves plenty of careers where it doesn’t matter if you have ink or not!

But I can imagine that you are still a bit hesitant. Or maybe you want to be absolutely sure you aren’t going to encounter any problems with it. Perhaps you have to convince your parents it is a good idea. Whatever your reason is, here are the safest tattoos you can have when it comes to professionalism.

Tattoos that are certainly not professional include; hurtful texts, dark or hurtful images, and cartoons. Bummer, I know. You were just booking an appointment to get something offensive tattooed on your face. Okay, in all seriousness, make sure your tattoo isn’t hurtful to anyone or tone-deaf.  Any small, elegant symbols are considered the most professional tattoos.

The most unprofessional places for tattoos include your face, hands, elbows, and knees. The places you don’t have to worry about are your wrists, ankles, and parts of your body hidden by your work attire, as they won't be seen when you are working.

There, now you never have to worry about a tattoo messing up your 10-year plan ever again!
