It is officially the holiday season when the most divine thing you can do is enjoy the cosiness of your warmest blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, and a good movie in front of the TV. The choices are limitless, however, in this article, you can find some of the best Christmas rom-coms on Netflix that will contribute to having the greatest holiday experience you can have.
1. The Holiday (2006)
Imagine this: two women; one of them lives in L.A., the other one lives in the snowy English countryside. They have nothing in common except for one thing - relationships problems. They want to get away from the drama for the holidays, so they switch homes via a website to escape reality. Little did they know they would both meet local guys and fall in love with them just in time to kiss underneath the mistletoe.
This movie will charm even the biggest rom-coms critics because of its plot and brilliant cast. The characters Amanda and Iris who switch homes are played by Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, and the lovely guys they fall in love with are played by Jude Law and Jack Black. The movie is also famous for its fascinating interior designs. That is because The Holiday is written and directed by Nancy Meyers, who has a passion for creating elevated and artistic living spaces for her movies as skilfully as a real interior designer.
So, if you still haven’t watched this movie, get comfortable on your couch and prepare yourself to be absorbed in the lovely Christmas feeling.
2. Love Actually (2003)
We cannot go without mentioning one of the classics. You need to invest your full attention in this one, as there are eight different storylines intertwined, each of them following the life of a couple and the way they deal with love. Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Kiera Knightly, and Emma Thompson are only some of the great actors you will see on the screen if you decide to watch this movie. It is extremely interesting to follow their stories, see the challenges they face in their love life, as well as their romantic moments. And all of this in the most romantic season of the year. In the ending scene, you can see the clear connection between the characters, and the movie just makes sense.
For some, Love Actually might be “too cheesy”, but in the end, this is what romantic comedies are for. You laugh, you cry, and it makes you think about the important relationships in life. The director Richard Curtis obviously did a great job, as the movie was nominated for numerous awards, and in 2004 Bill Nighy even won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in the BAFTA Awards. Love Actually has returned to Netflix in November just in time for the Holiday season and the annual re-watch for those who have already seen it. And if you still haven’t, what are you waiting for?
3. Single All the Way (2021)
It is time to also discuss one of the latest Netflix Originals. Single All the Way’s release date was the 2nd of December 2021, which makes it the newest Christmas rom-com on the platform. Michael Urie, who played the role of Marc in Ugly Betty, is now the leading actor in this movie. His name is Peter and he convinces his best friend Nick to pretend that they are a couple to avoid his family’s judgement for being single on Christmas. Their plan seems to be going very well until Peter is set up on a blind date with his mother’s handsome personal trainer and the fake romance with his best friend begins to unravel.
I will not reveal more, as I don’t want to give any spoilers to those who decide to enjoy this cinematic piece. I can only mention that the movie is starring Jennifer Coolidge and Kathy Najimy, which is already a reason to press play. Single All the Way represents the LGBTQ+ community and is actually the first gay Christmas romance film on Netflix, which makes it very special for cinematic history.
Now it is time to choose which of these movies captured your attention the most and make sure to watch it on a cold December evening with your Christmas lights on to enjoy it to the fullest.
