Welcome to (remastered), the bi-monthly read platform for music nerds and listeners
looking to find deep-dives into a variety of genres, rankings and recommendations to broaden your music taste and knowledge. Through monthly lists and deep dives, we will be cutting deeper into music topics in collaboration with ‘Tunes with Tempest', a live HUB radio production that dives into a different genre every month with a live DJ set as the cherry on top. We will briefly be looking back at last season’s Tunes with Tempest episodes, where Jungle and Detroit Techno were tackled as the highlighted topics. To celebrate Jungle and Detroit Techno one last time, lets shed a light on two of their female pioneers.
DJ Rap
DJ Rap, also known as Charissa Saverio, is an illusive female pioneer of the Jungle and Electronic Music scene in Britain. The 54 year old who is originally from Singapore, found success through her traditional electronic music, however, her body of work mainly consists of Jungle beats that have proven to stand the test of time and still get played in clubs across the globe ‘til this day. Her status as an icon in the Jungle industry stems from her consistent work throughout the years, alongside her label PROPA. Not only is she a DJ, but she also dabbles in producing, singing and acting for other musical artists across the world. This incredible skillset has made her a force to be reckoned with within her community, yet there has been very little acknowledgment of her work within the global club scene. As one of the most iconic female Jungle pioneers, celebration and acknowledgement of her years of work is only natural.

DJ Minx
DJ Minx, the alias of Jennifer Witcher, is a Detroit Techno DJ most famous for her work in electronic dance genre. As the youngest of five and one of the few openly lesbian DJ’s in her scene, she was eager to make herself an important figure in Detroit’s music scene. In 1996 Witcher founded the DJ collective 'Women on Wax'- a special group for female DJs from Detroit. In 2001, she created the label “Women on Wax Recordings” and its sub-set “W.O.W. B.A.M”. Her activism for women and her position as a pioneer of the queer movement in Detroit not only make her an iconic DJ, but also an important figure in the Detroit queer and feminist movement.
