As you may or may not know, the HUB website is mostly run by Creative Business students. However, the goal of the HUB is to be a community for every student at our university. For this reason, I thought it would be good to hear a word from every study there is at BUas. Right now, there is a total of eight different bachelors at BUas. Of course, there is a lot of information on each study on the official BUas website, but that is always so formal and to be honest a little boring. So, I have found a representative for each study to tell us what their course entails and what they love most about it. Hopefully this will give you an overview of the BUas community in an entertaining way.

Hotel Management - Lottie Janssen, third year
Hotel management is like a business course but with hospitality. For the first two years we learn everything we can about business and the hospitality industry. I love how practical it is, at the end of each year there is a big project that involves everything we had learnt from the previous years. For example, in year one we had to come up with a lobby of the future (so we had interviews, prototypes of our hotels).

We have a lot of guest lectures from people working in the industry, especially in year one. They give us inspiration and show us what kind of jobs we can end up doing.

One of my favourite courses is Sibelicious as we learn about different wines, alcohol and food. We have a taste lab where we learn how to serve and taste different types of spirits, wines, tea and beer. Which student does not enjoy alcohol, right? We would even get a course on making cocktails, unfortunately that one got cancelled due to covid.

Facility Management - José Berens, fourth year
Facility management isn’t very known just yet, but it is the future! As a facility manager you are responsible to create a safe and welcoming work environment for all kind of employees. You manage all facilities of any type of organization. You have to make sure the first needs are met such as security, catering and cleaning and many more things. Making sure all people can function as efficiently as possible with the right workplace design or managing the service and ICT desk, up until making sure all departments are filled with all physical and mental needs!

During my studies we obviously had many great moments; celebrating the P ceremony, having drinks in the city, and organizing a charity event were great. One of the funniest things that happened was during sibelicious, our practice course. In the course we learn what it is like to work in the industry. One of my fellow classmates ordered 80 kilos of cucumbers instead of 8. We all had a great laugh about it and we had cucumber added to all our dishes. We had things like a healthy smoothie with cucumber, sandwiches with cucumber, there was free cucumber salads. It was hilarious!

Tourism Management - Rosie Bomers, third year
The study international tourism management is a four-year study completely in English, where you explore the tourism industry. You will focus on the business side of tourism, but also the creative side. In your first year you’re going to explore different travel destinations, learn about management, marketing and consumer behaviour. In year two you’re going to continue this and learn about the challenges different destinations are facing. You will also learn a lot of digital skills since most trips are booked online. The tourism industry is changing fast these days which makes it more of a challenge.

What makes this study so much fun is the international students, there are a lot of different nationalities and thus a lot of fun people! Working in a group with different cultures can be a challenge, but challenges make it fun. The whole study has a relaxed atmosphere and a lot of social students who enjoy a good party.

Logistics Engineering - Richard Tax, second year
I’m Richard and I’m currently in my second year of the bachelor Logistics Engineering at BUas.

I’ve chosen BUas and Logistics because I have a background in Engineering. Since I still wanted to be involved with engineering and wanted to develop my marketing/finance and planning abilities, logistics engineering was the right choice for me. You learn to organise and plan the distribution of information and goods. The first year of logistics was one of the best years of my life: made a lot of new friends, had a lot of fun during projects and of course: a lot of parties with your classmates. After every project there is drinks and music.

So, if you like to work hard during projects and love the payoff of a nice cold beer after completing a task: choose Logistics Engineering at BUas

Built Environment - Gabriele, second year
Built Environment is all about taking something old and creating something new and beautiful. It's more than just drawing blocks on a paper and hoping for the best! When you're busy with this study, even simple thing as walking down the street turn into a thinking train of what could be done here and how could you have had made it 100% better!

What I love the most about my study? It must be the fact that we get to bring the most out-of-the-box ideas, work with different people from different cultures and learn from each other. This, because all of us see cities and the world in completely different ways.

Leisure & Events Management - Constance, fourth year
I'm Constance, a French student studying Leisure & Events Management at BUas. I'm currently in my fourth year and working on my graduation assignment for Tomorrowland. If I had to describe my study in 3 words I would say; experience, network and international!
I love being an L&E student since I evolved in a very international environment during the past 4 years. I had the opportunity to get in touch with different professionals working for amazing events and leisure related companies. Experience is something we always talk about in my study track, it is important for us, as BUas students and future L&E professionals to provide great and meaningful experiences to people. As you may already know, leisure can be referred to as free time and very often people want to have fun and relax during this time. Knowing I can create events, activities, marketing campaigns, etc. that can make people happy is the best thing to me!

Concerning the fun part, I'd say visiting different companies and having field trips is great!  We made a project over a few days that was focusing on how to maintain international relationships between BUas and the Finnish university Metropolia. After that we went to get some beers with the Finnish students which ended up singing karaoke in Finnish for us. Forward to 2019, when I went on exchange to Berlin. I got on well with 2 Finnish girls and told them I went to Helsinki on a field trip. I was so excited to learn they were students from that university, so I showed them pictures and videos. Surprisingly enough, the two girls were like "Oh my god that's us on your karaoke video!". We completely forgot about each other and realized we had met before. In conclusion, the world is small, and this study track allowed me to meet many people in different places.

Creative Media & Game Technologies - Juan Mayorca, second year
Games is divided in three major disciplines being programming, design, and visual arts. You are going to learn all about game programming, the practical, commercial and creative side of it. We work on small projects in order to both learn and get experience. We learn by practising in different team roles, so you’re prepared for almost any job in the gaming industry later, and so you know what it is you’re interested in and good at.

Sometimes we work together with the other disciplines. Working with other disciplines is by far the thing I love the most because you get to do things that you couldn't do by yourself, and the passion is infectious between the team. You get to combine all your talents and create awesome things.

Jette, second year Creative Business
Now for the most fun study of all (at least in my opinion), I have decided to add my own view of my study Creative Business. When someone asks what Creative Business is about, I always say: ‘Anything you can think of within media.’ The study is so broad we get the opportunity to learn about all fields within media, from radio and tv, to what I love most, which is publishing. In the first year, you learn a little bit about everything, then once you get to second year you can choose what you want to specialise in.  Like most other studies at BUas, this one is international which is a big plus for me personally.

What I love most about the study is the freedom, I feel that whatever I would want to explore within the media field, the teachers will find a way to make it possible. A great example is the free elective. It is an assignment taking up 56 study hours and you can choose to do whatever you want, as long as it helps you in your future career. Within your chosen specialisation there is also a lot of freedom. Being in publishing for the HUB website, I get to write about anything I want which I love.

Those were all the studies at BUas in short. I hope it made you feel a little more informed about what there is to do at our school. Most importantly I hope it makes you feel a little more connected to all the students at our campus.
