Nowadays it’s very common to learn English, unless of course it is your first language. If English is your second language, then you might wonder why learn yet another language? Well, you know the struggle, so here’s why it is worth it.

Explore the world

When you speak another language, travelling becomes way more fun. You can feel at home, live like a local and get an authentic experience of the country. It also gives you a lot of freedom and independence. Travelling can be scary sometimes, and it sucks not being able to communicate, but when you speak the language, there’s nothing stopping you from making the most out of your travel.

Perspective & Culture

Visiting another country changes your perspective of the world, however, speaking another language lets you connect with people. You become more tolerant and open minded, truly understand their culture, values, and even better, you make new friends! People love it when you speak their language and they love to compliment you on it, (and bonus: next time you travel, they let you stay in their home, so you don’t have to pay accommodation). No more cultural differences for you. Now you know how to be polite, respectful and your new friends can share their memes with you. [laughs in new language]

Opportunities

Knowing multiple languages looks great on your resumé. It increases your chances of getting that job or internship you want, perhaps even in a different country. It also expands your choices for studying, for example, a program that is only available in a different language. You get access to cheaper but good quality education and you could even get scholarships. (tip: make some extra money for teaching)

Brainpower

Learning a new language can improve your memory, boost your creativity and improve your problem-solving skills. It puts your brain to work in different areas, so you can even become better at math! (but if not, then at least you keep your brain healthy).

Language Courses can be expensive, that’s why you can start by using free apps like Duolingo, and YouTube videos. You can also try watching your shows in their original language with subtitles or listening to songs.

On another note, if you happen to date a foreigner, learning their language will earn you extra points with their parents 😉
