True Crime Podcasts on Spotify

There are over 500.00 different podcasts available on Spotify in all sorts of genres. My all-time favourite genre is for sure True Crime and luckily many others love this genre too. Just on Spotify, there are already over 80 different true crime podcasts, so there is never a dull moment if you ask me. Before I recommend you my three favourite true crime podcasts, I would first like to tell you a bit more about why we are so fascinated with true crime.

If you ask Scott Bonn, professor of criminology at Drew University and author of the book, Why We Love Serial Killers, we are fascinated with true crime because “true crime triggers the most basic and powerful emotion in all of us—fear.” The professor also explains that people tend to look at true crime and somehow believe that it is a way to face their fears, without having to actually experience these fears.

Another interesting thing to know about true crime is that according to a study conducted by social psychologist Amanda Vicary, women tend to be more interested in the topic than men. She found out that one of the reasons for this is that women tend to be more fascinated by the psychological side of true crime cases and its stories. In addition to that, the social psychologist also found that “women seem to like reading about survival, whether it was preventing or surviving a crime”. She believes that this has to do with women being generally more vulnerable to become a victim of a crime. By listening and “educating” themselves with true crime stories, they might feel like they learn how they can maybe prevent it.

Now that you know a little bit more about why true crime is so interesting, I will tell you a bit about my three favourite true crime podcasts. I have listened to many different podcasts, however, there are three that I follow on a regular basis (from which, with one of them, I am truly obsessed).

Casefile
Casefile is an Australian true crime podcast with weekly new episodes. Almost every episode covers a different case, either a cold or a solved case. Most of the cases that are covered in this podcast are well-known murders and serial crimes. The podcast is hosted by an anonymous Australian man which makes it even more interesting to listen to.

The Dating Game Killer
The Dating Game Killer is a podcast that covers one case spread over several episodes. In this series, the case of Rodney Alcala is covered, a man who won a date on the popular dating show called, The Dating Game. However, this man was not just a normal guy, but turns out to be a sociopath, child molester, and murder. More interesting to know is how this man fooled everyone.

Crime Junkie
Last, but not least is Crime Junkie, the first podcasts I’ve ever listened to and also forever my most favourite one. This is the one podcast that I tell all my friends about and listen to every single week. Every week they cover a new case, mostly cold cases. The cases that they cover are not just the big cases, but also the cases that never received enough attention or have been forgotten. Ashley Flowers, the host of the podcast, is a true crime junkie and loves to tell the most interesting stories that will give you full body chills!

A little piece of advice from me to you, is to not listen to these kinds of podcasts when you are driving in the middle of the night on an abandoned road, because this will make everything even scarier since they are all true crimes. Besides that, as Ashley Flowers always says in her podcast, crime junkie rule number one: Be Weird, Be Rude, Stay Alive. Enjoy listening!
