Dutch music is infamous for its folk, EDM and carnival (party) music, which honestly is not all that appealing to internationals, right? This week we will be delving into some of the lesser known Dutch artists amongst internationals that may pique your interest in our music industry. With many EDM and folk artists taking the mainstage, we will be focusing on Nederpop artists who have the power to capture audiences beyond speakers of their native tongue.
Eefje de Visser
One of the most fundamental artists on this list is Eefje de Visser. As the biggest inspiration behind most of the Dutch singer-songwriters, she has made waves with her dark and dreamy pop music since her radio debut in 2002. She still actively performs and has her own record company. Her second to last album ‘Bitterzoet’ (Bittersweet) even being announced as the best record of the year in 2020. If you are into dark and mysterious melodies, Eefje’s music is more than worth checking out.
Froukje
Froukje is a young rising alternative pop singer-songwriter who is not only well known amongst Dutch youth, but also seems to be one of the most popular Dutch alternative pop musicians amongst international students in The Netherlands. Widely recognized for her relatable lyrics and unique production, the 23-year-old made a name for herself at 18 when a song she made for a school assignment ‘Groter Dan Ik’ (Gigger Than Me) went viral for its direct perspective on climate change coming from a young person. Since then, the singer has played large venues in The Netherlands and Belgium. She can also often be found performing with her best friend, who you will read more about later on in the list. Her infectious music about real-time issues about growing older, love, and the state of society translate to all people of our generation.
Doe Maar
Doe Maar is one of The Netherland’s most recognizable and biggest bands. With their unique style and distinctively 80’s sound, their reggae inspired pop music is still popular throughout the country across all generations. Widely recognized as one of the best Dutch artists, it is without a doubt that their music has the power to capture non-Dutch speakers with their iconic beats receiving recognition beyond language. Looking for a nostalgic throwback sound coming from a band with a rich history and the necessary drama that comes with an eighties band? Doe Maar is the way to go.
Spinvis
Spinvis, stage name of Erik de Jong, is a unique artist with a unique backstory. The 63-year-old man started making music after quitting his work in a mail sorting factory despite the fact that he does not sing. His music, which is simple, yet incredibly layered in its composition, has reached multiple generations of Dutch youth. The main themes of his music surround causal day-to-day life, with cynicism and societal critique often taking the center stage. You can still find Spinvis playing theatres across the country where he gives his songs a platform in a society that is still in need of their deeper messaging, but also the blunt honesty they provide. When looking for an artist to challenge your music taste, Spinvis makes for a perfect choice.
S10
S10, the stage name of Stien den Hollander, is a 24-year-old Dutch singer and rapper. Often recognized by international students for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022. The young blonde has made quite a name for herself on Dutch stages. Starting off as a young rapper looking to music as a coping mechanism to give a name to her turbulent feelings at a young age, she now has made a successful career for herself as a singer. Also known as Froukje’s best friend and long-time collaborator amongst fans, she has established the career of her dreams as she gears up for a collaborative release with ex-Bring Me the Horizon member Jordan Fish. If you are a fan of a unique and ever-evolving sound and pure and honest lyrics, check out S10’s discography.
