We probably have all done this when we were little: putting two random foods together that we thought tasted delicious in combination with one another. For example, when I was younger, we used to go swimming to a local pool nearby. Then we would always get fries and ice cream to dip them in. Which, looking back at it now seems a bit disgusting. Of course, as we grow older, we forget about most of these things, which is actually quite unfortunate! Because these ‘delicious’ combinations can come in handy sometimes. For example, when you are really looking forward to that tasty, well-deserved snack after a long day of studying. But you just don’t have anything to your liking in the fridge. Or if you just want to spice things up instead of always having the same old snacks. Next time that happens, these extraordinary food combinations might be your perfect solution!
1. Apple syrup and cheese
Yes, you read that correctly; cheese in combination with apple syrup (or better known as “appelstroop” for the Dutchies among us). This combination was inspired by my mom, who eats at least one cracker with apple syrup and cheese on them every day and is a big fan of this combination. So, if you ever happen to get bored of the same old cracker toppings make sure to try this one out.
2. Potato chips and ketchup
This combination was actually recommended to me by a friend. Although dipping sauce often tastes good with chips, using ketchup as the dip is usually not the way to go. However, they actually taste great together! So, when you are finally able to host that post-corona party and you happen to run out of dipping sauce, just use ketchup instead!
3. Mango and smoked chicken
These two together taste especially good when put on some bread. Combined with some lettuce and honey, this meal will taste absolutely delicious! Hence, try something new for lunch (or possibly even dinner) that you can just make at home by using these two as your topping!
4. Salami and grapes
As we’re on the topic of putting fruit and meat together, this combination might also be interesting for you. At parties, salami and grapes are often put separately on the table (or on a “borrelplank” as the Dutchies may know) but when you put these two together it also makes a delicious snack.
5. Pineapple and pizza
Although this controversial combination is very common, I still feel like it needs a place on this list. Many people believe that pineapple is not supposed to go on a pizza. However, personally I think that these two do belong together. The sweet flavor of the pineapple and the saltiness of the pizza crust make a heavenly taste sensation. So even though you might not agree with me, I would definitely recommend this one.
6. Salt and pepper on apples
This last one is especially great if you just want to spice things up. Putting some salt and pepper on your apple will create even more flavor to the refreshing taste of the apple itself. And if that is still too boring for you, you could also get some honey to use as a dip or put some cinnamon on them.
Well, that concludes this list of weird (but good!) food combinations. However, before I close off , there are a few honorable mentions that did not make my list of recommendations, but still might be interesting (or shocking) to you:
• Chocolate and avocado
• Cheddar cheese and apple pie
• Hot sauce and brownies
• Banana and spaghetti
• Pickles and peanut butter
Feel free to try all of these at home. Enjoy your meal!
